Diagnostic Testing

If your child is applying to middle or high school this fall, don’t wait - NOW is the time to schedule a diagnostic test.

What tests will my child need to take?

If your child is applying to independent middle or high schools, they will likely need to take the ISEE or SSAT. These are standardized tests that schools use to determine your child’s academic aptitude, and are a big part of many applications. If your child is applying to a specialized high school, they will need to take an SHSAT, and if they are applying to a Catholic school, they may need to take an HSPT or TACHS.

This is also a great time for 10th graders to take a mock SAT or ACT to get a sense of their starting point as they look ahead to testing during their junior year.

Why take a diagnostic test?

All of the tests required in the application process, regardless of level, are difficult. They require a course of preparation, which can look different from child to child. A diagnostic test can help you determine what course of preparation is most appropriate for your child.

A diagnostic test is a full-length mock test. Using the scores from the test, you can see where your child is already strong, and where they still have room to grow. This will help you understand several things: how much time you should allot for preparation, how much support your child will need, and an idea of what scores you can expect from your child after they prepare. All of this information is invaluable as you begin the application process.

When is the best time to take a diagnostic test?

NOW is the best time! We tell our students to take their diagnostic test for middle and high school application around spring break at the earliest. This way, they have already seen much of the content at school (so it’s not too early), but they have plenty of time to prepare. If your child will need a lot of preparation time, the earlier you know, the better.

How can I register for a diagnostic test?

Smart City Tutors offers diagnostic testing both virtually (in-home) and in our office. To register, you can submit an inquiry form and indicate in the notes that you would like a diagnostic test, or you can email info@smartcitytutoring.com

Do I have to do tutoring if I take a diagnostic test?

Not necessarily! We are happy to provide diagnostic testing to any student who inquires. After the diagnostic test, a member of our team will review the results with you and will give you recommendations for next steps. If tutoring is appropriate, we can support you in finding a tutor to support your child, but if you’d prefer to prepare independently, that’s completely fine, too.
